Lot of ups and downs in the fishing the last couple weeks especially for walleyes. Been fishing every day, shore lunch of perch and walleye hasn't been a problem but on the flat calm, sunny 80* days bring snacks, lunch hasn't always been at noon. There have been a few tough fishing days. On the flat water days, have been fishing deep wood, mostly natural but some cribs. Have had some nice fish in the right 6-8' wood structure even on some of the flat days(perch and walleyes). In the deeper structure getting a mixed bag of fish including some crappies and bluegills. Have had some good smallmouth fishing mostly in the 8-12' range fishing humps with wood and rock structure. I have been bringing crawlers and leeches as always this time of year, but also minnows, our boat has been doing best on the crawlers with some bass on leeches and a few walleyes and crappies on minnows but for us even the crappies have been doing better on crawlers.
The fishing this time of year is more weather related then other times of year, in my opinion, there is the full bloom of feed in the water in mid summer.
A quick recap of the last few days, weather and the bite:
Mon. flat, hot, sunny, half day trip, tough bite ,the afternoon the wind picked up I guessed the bite may have picked up but I was off the water.
Tue. weather front, clouds, wind, half day trip nice catch of walleyes and perch ,fish fry for family get together of seven people.
wed. not many days in the season when I have to hide from the wind, too rough to anchor square to the wind even with 100' of rope out, 35 mph+. Found a nice catch of mostly perch some walleyes and gills in wood 3-7' hiding behind an island, vertical jigging half crawlers some perch up to 11". Talked to D.P the next day he did the same thing that day with similar results. There is always somewhere to catch fish!
Today had a great day with veteran fisherman and his girlfriend (fairly new to fishing) had a fun day with smallmouth and a mixed bag of other fish. Fun to see someone improve substantially from beginning of day to end of day. In general I find it easier to teach people with little experience, slip bobber fishing sounds easy and it is, but there is refinement in technique, if done right, few fish are missed. The weather: big wind for most of the day, neat to watch in the afternoon a big storm missed 4 or 5 miles north and another a few miles south, we were far on the south end of the flowage, the storm to the north was going to miss a little north but looked close to fisherman's landing and the southerly storm looked like a sure miss to the south we came to the conclusion better to stay where we were and keep fishing. (quick refuge was nearby).
Thank you everyone who chose my guide service, it's been a good season so far.

We fished deeper wood structure today in the 12-14' range. Fished with slip bobbers all day and each customer and myself also cast an 1/8 oz. slow fall jig and 1/2 crawler. A high percentage of our fish came on the jigs despite the nice chop to go with the bobbers. Crawlers caught most of the fish.We did get a few bass on the dead stick with leeches. The 4 doz.crawlers were gone late in the afternoon. Leeches caught few fish once the crawlers were gone, fortunately it was time to pick up Mom to join the group for a fish fry. Four doz. crawlers is a marginal quanity to bring I usually bring more.
Nice to see some new posts glad to hear new visitors enjoying the TFF, it is an awesome body of water!

Report in effort to help those not catching fish. I had the day off today but did hear from guide friend that today was slow. There has been some tougher fishing the last couple weeks for walleye but we are catching walleye and other species.
Here is an account of the fishing yesterday, a day when the fish "weren't biting". If customers enjoy eating fish I enjoy sending them home with some boneless filets and or providing a shore lunch. The picture above are the fish we elected to keep. I have only been counting walleye this year, we caught 7 yesterday(had some missed fish) but only kept 1, the other 16 fish we kept were a mixed bag ,we also caught a lot of smallmouth and small perch, bluegill and rock bass, probably 50 or 60 fish total.
I am used to measuring my success in walleyes caught, it was a very slow day for me, my customers however did have fun.
Here is a rundown of what we fished in order, caught some fish on all spots except one: 1.- 6' hump, stumps mostly sand bottom 2.- 7' hump mostly rock bottom,a few scattered stumps 3.- 9' hump softer bottom big stumps, 4.& 5. 10' flat anchoring and fishing waypoints with heaviest concentration of wood, 6. 10' hump with clay bottom some wood and boulders 7. 4' log jamb with the wind pounding in (disapointment only spot where we caught nothing), 8.9' submerged bog. Did fish pretty shallow because of the big winds if flat go deeper 12-15 or shallow weeds 7' is as deep as they go most of the cabbage is 3-5', or shallow concentrations of bigger stumps.
If still no fish consider hiring myself or one of the other Mercer guides I have thur. and sun.open. You will catch fish.
Good luck.

Camping Report: Use of the campsites has been light the last few weeks. Fishing pressure has also been low. Parking in the lower lot has been readily available, some week days at 8 am I've been the only truck in the lot. Campers are asked to use the upper lot which has had a lot of open space. There have been a lot of people in the Mercer area, businesses and resorts have been busy, camping however on the TFF from my observation has been low.
Later in the day, yesterday we had a shore lunch, I often use f7 or f8 It is easy to beach the boat into the small gravel and sand with the fast dropping shore line. Late in the day on a beautiful Sunday the sites in close proximity to each other f7, f8, f10 and r17 were all open. For the reason in the summer I usually take f 7 or 8 (nice summer breeze) we took f10, with a 25 mph west wind its harder to keep the heat under the frying pan.
I do like some of the more remote campsites, the sites with picnic tables however do add a lot of convenience for dining.
In the course of taking people to an island for a bathroom break I have named one of the islands mosquito island. Don't know what it is maybe there is a small pond within the island but r6 would be pretty low on my choices for a summer site. During the day while having lunch on the islands mosquitos have been pretty non existent.

First spot, 10 minutes into the day Lawrence tied into this 44" musky on a slip bobber rig baited with a 1/2 crawler. Mom and sister watched as Lawrence played the fish well, we were lucky to get the fish into the net with the 6 lb. mono leader.
Gotta say it was cool! , looking forward to doing some musky fishing this year.
congratulations Lawrence and everyone landing these fish it is exciting.

Over due on a report, someone called today asking if I've been fishing , no reports lately. Sorry, I've fished everyday , started a few reports and fell asleep at the computer, thought I better sit in a desk chair tonight.
Looking back at the last several days and the report contained within.
Mon. the 6th rain all day no fishing can't blame them were able to reschedule. Tue picked up solo fisherman, Jeff, told him I have no read on the bite today ,fished with jackets on all day. Cold north wind, found slow but steady action on walleyes and smallmouth, deeper wood in 13-15', crawlers. Had 9 walleyes big enough to keep Jeff opted to do catch and release . Wed. regular customers, planned half day trip, Acea 8 year old was having fun ,we fished all day, caught fish in a variety of structure: cribs, river channel edges and humps in the 10-12' range. Not jumpin in the boat, but enough action to keep everyone's interest up. Kept a few bigger walleyes and perch for a fish fry, released the rest.
Thursday found a tough bite during the day ,worked a lot of diverse structure with two good anglers, a lot of laughs and good conversation but the fishing was very slow. Didn't have a problem with shore lunch of walleye and perch but the catch beyond that was light. Did have some good smallmouth in 10-12' rock/wood crawlers and leeches. Things can change fast, picked up father and 7 year old daughter with very little fishing experience ,for a late day trip, after a tough day with the two seasoned anglers. Our first spot, threw the buoy on a 10' wood spot I hadn't fished since late May. We had a hard time keeping more then 2 lines in the water, caught 20 fish off the spot: walleye, smallmouth, perch and rock bass including a 21" walleye 7 year old Sierra caught and released. Her father and I had a ball watching her battle smallmouth and walleye the regret was not having a video recorder.
When I have young kids in the boat I have them sit in the seat next to me and start out setting the hook and handing off the rod. I set the hook as hard as I can without breaking the 6 lb. leader on a heavy fish, this helps keep the fish on during the hand off, trying to keep tension on the fish.
Fri., Scott, another customer I've fished many times with, no matter how many fish some people have caught they still have fun catching fish on bobbers. We ran into panfish right out of the gate and stayed with that for half the day before looking for walleyes and smallmouth. At days end I cleaned a combination of 25 fish, we figured we released 3 fish for each one we kept, thats a lot of fish! A highlight of the day was a 40 plus musky we had almost to the net before he decided to give up the bluegill in it's mouth. Downed trees, stumps and 8' with brush and roots ; lots of crawlers.
Sat good day with two groups, nice walleyes, smallmouth and some perch. Wood and rock structure any where from 11-15' mostly crawlers. Fished with group who had a tough week on a clear water lake and decided to try the flowage, they were impressed. Fished with my farthest residing fisherman, exchange student Nico from Spain, he had a great time battling smallmouth.
Sunday was an enlightening day. Fished with two very good jig fisherman. There was a real nice chop on the water we had 4 bobber poles out most of the day and we each cast a jig with half crawler. We fished water from 11-15'. We kept 7 walleyes 6 were 16"-17-1/2" (nice fish), released smaller walleyes also kept some nice perch. The three of us caught about an equal amount of fish. Why the walleyes wouldn't take the bobbers with the nice chop was unusual. The stringer picture would have looked different with less seasoned jig fisherman, it was a very light bite, harder to detect in the deeper water and with the wind blowing.
Long enough report. Today at 8am I was the only car in the lot. The fishing has been good most days, with an occasional tough bite (typical of any body of water) not many fisherman out the last couple weeks?
Have Friday open.

FISHING REPORT
7/4/15 8:05 PM CST
Conditions: Sunny
The bite yesterday with the overcast skies and nice chop from the south wind provided a great day on the water for some bigger walleyes and smallmouth . In a half day guide trip we had a good catch of fish. We did best on mid lake humps with rock and wood structure. We caught fish on both leeches and crawlers. If you want to catch extra bass don't forget the dead stick with a leech.
As good as the bite was yesterday it was tough today, we fished cabbage in 4' to cribs in 16' and a lot of structure in between. I fish hard all day but with the completely flat water and bright skies it seemed like an exercise in futility. We have had a lot of nice catches on days like these but it wasn't in the cards for us today.
It may sound funny but I do believe the customers who are interested in learning how to fish the flowage, learn more on a day like today. With all the time not catching fish I was able to show my customer Jeff a lot of different type of structure and how it appears on the sonar along with all the walleyes that wouldn't bite.
I often get asked,"what do you do on a day when you have a shore lunch planned and you don't catch any fish". Being superstitious I am knocking on my wooden kitchen table as I say this: It doesn't happen.
Today I am quite sure was the lightest catch of fish since I started guiding 5 years ago, we ate 3 perch,1 crappie,1 pike,1 walleye and 2 rock bass.Fish go a long way , I often don't eat fish every day, my three guests could eat all but one piece which I finished, pike, my favorite. We did catch a few small released walleyes after lunch but all in all tough day on the pond.
HAPPY 4 th !!!

FISHING REPORT
7/3/15 12:17 AM CST
Conditions: Partly Sunny
I've had the pleasure of making friends through guiding, today I fished with Aiden and Porter, their parents took their younger kids out enjoying other water sports on a Mercer area lake. We were entrusted to bring home the fish fry.Customers since my first year of guiding, previously I had fished with the group of five or six. Our day started slow we fished for probably an hour before our first walleye. We worked a lot of structure ( mostly wood) from 7 feet to 16'. We caught a lot of the fish in 10-12' wood/rock. Our limit of 9 walleyes and 11 perch came slow, our last walleye at 4pm. We did best on crawlers although did catch fish on leeches and minnows.
It was fun to see the progression of the kids as fisherman, last year the older Porter was already a good fisherman, able to stay with a bite and not give the pole a jerk at the first sign of a bite. This year Aiden who missed a lot of fish last year caught the most fish this year a pivotal age seems to be around 11 years old.
I have fished other bodies of water, but all posts on this site and every picture posted have been taken on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage.

Pictures from Today. Fun family to fish with! Daughter and son Lilly and John already share their parents passion for the outdoors.
We found smallmouth, perch and walleye on 10-12' humps with wood and rock. Crawlers, casting and on bobbers and leeches on dead sticks all caught fish. Had some nice smallmouth, Lilly had her hands full with the biggest 18-1/4".
Thank you everyone who chose my guide service.
