Conditions: Partly Sunny Air Temp: 76° - 80ยบ F Water Temp: 71° - 75° F
Lot of ups and downs in the fishing the last couple weeks especially for walleyes. Been fishing every day, shore lunch of perch and walleye hasn't been a problem but on the flat calm, sunny 80* days bring snacks, lunch hasn't always been at noon. There have been a few tough fishing days. On the flat water days, have been fishing deep wood, mostly natural but some cribs. Have had some nice fish in the right 6-8' wood structure even on some of the flat days(perch and walleyes). In the deeper structure getting a mixed bag of fish including some crappies and bluegills. Have had some good smallmouth fishing mostly in the 8-12' range fishing humps with wood and rock structure. I have been bringing crawlers and leeches as always this time of year, but also minnows, our boat has been doing best on the crawlers with some bass on leeches and a few walleyes and crappies on minnows but for us even the crappies have been doing better on crawlers.
The fishing this time of year is more weather related then other times of year, in my opinion, there is the full bloom of feed in the water in mid summer.
A quick recap of the last few days, weather and the bite:
Mon. flat, hot, sunny, half day trip, tough bite ,the afternoon the wind picked up I guessed the bite may have picked up but I was off the water.
Tue. weather front, clouds, wind, half day trip nice catch of walleyes and perch ,fish fry for family get together of seven people.
wed. not many days in the season when I have to hide from the wind, too rough to anchor square to the wind even with 100' of rope out, 35 mph+. Found a nice catch of mostly perch some walleyes and gills in wood 3-7' hiding behind an island, vertical jigging half crawlers some perch up to 11". Talked to D.P the next day he did the same thing that day with similar results. There is always somewhere to catch fish!
Today had a great day with veteran fisherman and his girlfriend (fairly new to fishing) had a fun day with smallmouth and a mixed bag of other fish. Fun to see someone improve substantially from beginning of day to end of day. In general I find it easier to teach people with little experience, slip bobber fishing sounds easy and it is, but there is refinement in technique, if done right, few fish are missed. The weather: big wind for most of the day, neat to watch in the afternoon a big storm missed 4 or 5 miles north and another a few miles south, we were far on the south end of the flowage, the storm to the north was going to miss a little north but looked close to fisherman's landing and the southerly storm looked like a sure miss to the south we came to the conclusion better to stay where we were and keep fishing. (quick refuge was nearby).
Thank you everyone who chose my guide service, it's been a good season so far.
