There were a lot of people out trying to enjoy the TFF on this Labor day weekend despite the weather. Yesterday it took awhile to find a site for a shore lunch, we wound up taking a ride south and finding R-6 open. I like to think I'm pretty organized for the shore lunches, seldom do I forget anything, like the time I forgot the forks and had to make them with sticks and electrical tape. Yesterday I forgot the bread crumbs, I dipped the walleye fillets into the egg & milk wash then into the hot cast iron skillet coated with olive oil, simple cooking, turned out very good. Father and son Dave and Wes enjoyed the fishing and the cooking, by early afternoon we had 25 fish to clean including a limit of walleyes. We caught perch, bluegills, crappies, smallmouth and walleyes in a lot of diverse cover from 6-16 fow. With wind and clouds fish can be caught shallow even on the last day of August. I make a point to report the tough bite days, the previous day (Saturday) I had a morning trip with three customers, we found the walleyes in a very negative mood, actually all the fish. We caught small walleyes, kept one, some bluegills, a smallmouth and a couple perch, for one of the lightest catches of the season. We have been catching bluegills on the deeper structure we're fishing this time of the year. I have found them to be a barometer, if you can't get the bluegills to bite it's going to likely be some tough fishing. The fish seldom go two days in a row without a good bite occurring at some point in the day the last two days were a reflection of that. The summer went by way too fast, especially for son Tom who has school tomorrow, 6:30 is going to be a rude awakening. The redeeming factor to summers end is some of the best walleye fishing of the year coming late sept/ through boat take out, last year nov. 5th.
