FISHING REPORT 10/18/15 9:29 PM CST Conditions: Sunny Air Temp: 51° - 55° F Water Temp: 46° - 50° F We have found a good fall walleye bite this week, numbers of walleyes being caught in water ranging from 12-25', extra large fatheads and 1/8 oz. jigs. Some fish are giving the classic walleye bite others a light bite, just feeling weight on the line. Been catching fish on sand and rock bottom getting some big perch and an occasional crappie in the mix. Smallmouth on heavy wood structure in 10-16', bobbers and vertical jigging or dead sticks, picking out the biggest fatheads in the baitwell for them. I know the muskies are active but haven't been fishing for them, have some combination walleye/musky trips last week in Oct. looking forward to that. Slowest bite day in the last week was thur., even during the fall, weather can affect the mood of the fish, we kept plugging away at good structure and found hungry walleyes in 14-17' on rocks on the last spot of the day. The best day was today with a father and son who made the trip from Madison. We had a compact day of fishing but the final count was 39 walleyes, we released quite a few fish that were bigger than the ones swimming in the livewell, I don't have a problem with that neither did the customers, 13 & 14" fish are nice sized to keep. Last weekend while fishing with Rob and Edie I pulled up the anchor and pulled a gold, glitter flaked, red hooked jig out of the anchor rope. I showed it to Rob who's quick sense of humor identified the jig as an early 1980's disco jig, we got a good laugh. Fast forward to yesterday, fishing with two older gentleman (not that much older, getting old myself). Peter fishing in the bow of the boat at the first spot of the day caught 4 or 5 walleyes before I caught one. I discourage people from bringing their own rods unless they have a special rod they like, Peter boarded the boat with a st. croix legend extreme with a reel way out of my price range, obviously a serious fisherman. I'm getting side tracked, he also brought his own box full of jigs a large assortment were the exact gold, glitter flaked, red hooked jig we had laughed at, it was what he had caught the first 4 or 5 fish on. I don't feel I should ever get out fished spending as much time with a fishing rod in my hand as I do, however as a good guide my goal is to get out fished every day. I try to position the boat for the customers to catch the fish but when someone catches more fish than I do fishing a broad spot, I take note. Peter said after fishing years in Canada with his wife they have found that particular jig to significantly out fish all other colors. The ducks and geese are flying ,the grouse are flushing, deer making scrapes, lot to do, but the fish are still biting, actually the next couple weeks will be prime for walleyes and musky.
