FISHING REPORT
9/23/15 10:06 PM CST
Conditions: Partly Sunny Air Temp: 71° - 75° F Water Temp: 61° - 65° F
The warm weather and warm water temps (mid 60's) have the walleyes in locations of a late summer pattern. Deeper wood is where we have been looking and catching fish, we have caught a few on deep rocks but no fall bite high numbers. Walleyes and crappies have been caught using 1/8 oz. slow fall jigs and extra large fatheads, some still on 1/2 crawlers but now doing better on minnows. We have still been catching big bluegills on deeper wood and on cribs using crawlers. Some days we are catching more gills casting 1/8 oz. jigs for the gills then on the slip bobbers. They are sometimes more aggressive on a moving bait. Have been seeing some active muskies but haven't had much demand for their pursuit yet.
This past weekend my son Jack helped me out and took customers out sat. and sun., his first time on his own, he's been a good fisherman since he was young, he did well guiding. Sunday we got together for a group shore lunch ( canadian style). I fished some areas near where my customers were staying, showing them areas they might want to try, and contributed panfish for the shore lunch, Jack and his group brought in 8 walleyes(did the best in 10-12' not far from deeper water), he was pretty excited to catch more walleyes than his dad! ( so was I).
I try to start most days giving a quick briefing of current fishing conditions and options on what species they might want to fish for as we're idling away from the dock. Today my customers wanted to go heavier on the panfish, spent a great day with a father and son, wound up with a nice mixed bag of fish and enjoyed a shore lunch. Yesterday had two friends who fished together for many years, they had spent a lot of years fishing with a legend the late Tommy Zinda. I really enjoyed asking ques. about him and his style. They wanted to fish walleyes, we didn't do any bobber fishing just fished a lot of spots casting a jig and a minnow a run and gun style of fishing I really enjoy. We fished 15-20 spots, often one and done for fish on the spots, we caught 16 walleyes, only 5 we kept but did have some nice crappies. We tried some fall pattern spots and worked drops on the edge of river channels. Most of our fish were relating to wood structure in 12-16'.
The warm weather has been slow in developing an aggressive fall bite but it sure has been pleasant to fish in! It's a long winter up here. Fall colors are turning slowly each day with birches starting to show some yellow, an occasional random maple in full color but most green.
