FISHING REPORT
8/16/15 8:59 PM CST
Conditions: Partly Sunny
Not sure why but the last three days the walleye fishing has turned on a dime. For two to three weeks walleyes have been hard to come by, while other fish have bit pretty well. Please don't take this the wrong way but I don't take a lot of stock in other peoples theories as to why. There are a few exceptions, one a person with a science background, two other people who have way more years( me 35) fishing on the TFF then I do. The fishing in August can always slow down with all the available forage but not generally as slow as the last two or three weeks. One theory, a huge hatch of perch, another, the combination of the normal August forage base but more so some pretty cloudy water from a long stretch of wind and rain. My customers and I caught a bunch of fish in the Bastine area a few days ago, I happened to run into the proponent of theory two the next day, he asked what the water was like in the Bastine area " ya know Nick, now that you mention it, it was real clear compared to elsewhere I've been fishing". Not sure who was right but in the last three days we caught 40 walleyes ( counting all sizes) today my father and daughter customers only wanted to keep enough for shore lunch and a fish fry for mother and two sisters back at the cabin, they ate a couple gills a crappie and big perch kept 4 walleyes 15-1/2-17-1/2" and released the rest.
I'm not sure why the slow stretch but it is nice to have a hiatus from the tough walleye bite.
Today with the chop and clouds we fished shallow ( for this time of year) 7-11', mainly because they were also interested in smb, we also caught some nice bass, why do the dead sticks with leeches catch most of the smb? Previous two days, calm sunny: deep wood, 1/2 crawlers, bobbers and casting slow fall jigs.A few crappies and walleyes on fatheads.
Good fishing to you.
