FISHING REPORT

Conditions: Cloudy Air Temp: 61° - 65° F Water Temp: 56° - 60° F
The walleye bite has been very good, after 9 days of fishing two days were tough, caught fish but not numbers, the other 7, lots of fish. We have been catching limits of 13-16" fish and releasing some fish 18"-to biggest 24". With the spawn over for three weeks, most years I am fishing almost exclusively in water under 8'in May. This season we have found a good pattern in anywhere from 10-20'.In the deeper water I like to throw 1/8 oz. jigs instead of 1/16 with extra large fatheads, we have also caught a lot of fish on bobbers. We're bringing the jigs back with a real slow retrieve dragging them across the bottom. It's rewarding to teach people the technique of finesse jig fishing, a lot of good fisherman catch fish with other methods and haven't done a lot of jigging its fun to watch them catch on and start setting the hook into walleyes. My last three trips have been with father and sons, yesterday dad, Jim, used one of my St. Croix Avids 7' med. lite, fast action to catch on fast to landing them jigging. I know I've said it before but a quality rod sure does help.
Saturday after guiding I picked up my oldest and youngest son at the dock, youngest son Tom, my closest hunting partner, is starting to take an interest in fishing. I saw some fish in 18', threw out the buoy and after catching several 11" walleyes, instead of pulling the anchors, took the opportunity to refine Tom's jigging. Throw it out 30' let it sink to the bottom (never timed it 7-10 seconds? line is now slack),close the bail, tighten up the line lift up on the rod tip hence pulling the jig across the bottom, lower the rod turning the handle to take up the slack, slowly lift up the rod tip again pulling the jig across the bottom. "I don't feel anything dad" that's because it is a soft silty bottom, sometimes you will feel the fish bite sometimes you will just feel a little extra weight. Tom, "I feel weight" lower your rod tip weight 5 seconds, ok now gently lift up the rod tip, see the slight bend and feel the weight, he's their set the hook! Sharp hard jerk straight up, keep the line tight. That's all there is to it Tom.
I do expect to renew a search for shallow fish in the next few days and for it to be more productive.
Time to get out the door, looking forward to scouting some new water today. Good fishing to you.
