I remember my first guide trips well, watching the weather the night before, a list of waypoints written on
paper sometimes going out early trying to locate fish. Now I start thinking about where we will fish about half
way through the 7 mile ride to the landing. I do sometimes forget to introduce myself or get names until we get
to the first spot, once the boat is in the water the brain starts processing the wind, weather, cloud cover
etc. the desire to have my customers catch fish takes over.
Today I picked up father and son, Dan and Kyle at their campsite, in one of my favorite areas of the flowage,
which I haven't fished much this year. We took a different approach to the day, instead of starting out at one
of the hundreds of waypoints in my gizmo, we looked for fish. With the flat water and sunny skies we looked at
breaks in the 12' range and followed the deeper edges of shallow humps. By 1:30 we had a 9 fish limit of
walleyes then went bass fishing. The walleyes didn't come fast and furious but with bright skies and flat water
in almost mid- August we had a nice catch of fish. As a guide, having a nice catch and gaining a half dozen new
waypoints combined with spending a day with a father and his 16 year old son having a great day of fishing,
pretty rewarding job.
We never ventured more then a 1/2 mile from their campsite and interestingly to me, caught most of the walleyes
relating to rock structure, boulders in 11-12' on the slope of humps or on gradual breaks into deeper water.
Did get some bass on this structure. Then in the afternoon on a 9' hump with big stumps. Crawlers mostly, some
on leeches, casting jigs and bobbers.
