Welcome!,
Two or three times a year I do an "e-mail blast" which goes out to all the contacts in my computer. If you have recently contacted me for a trip, don't worry I have it written in my log book, if you no longer wish to be on my contact list, I apologize just let me know and I will take you off the list.
One of the reasons for the contact is to remind previous customers that the fishing season is right around the corner, I'm sure most of you don't need reminding and are as ready as I am. Opening day for game fish in northern Wisconsin is May 7th. I just wanted to let previous customers know that my schedule for May and June is filling up fast but I do have some open time left.
There will be some new regs for the Turtle Flambeau Flowage and Trude Lake this year regarding smallmouth bass. The season opens the third Saturday in June as usual but the new rules are a limit of 5 per day either all under 14" or 4 under 14" and one 18" or over. The previous limit was two per day ,15" or over.
Looking forward to another good season of walleye fishing, there is a good population of 13-15" fish and last year's hatch was very successful. The ice fishing was relatively slow for walleyes this past winter meaning more than usual dodged the frying pan.
Last fall I made a major investment in my guiding business and purchased a new boat, a 20' Skeeter with a 115 four stroke Yamaha motor. I only got to use the boat for the last month of the season but was impressed, bigger faster boat, bigger motor using almost half the gas of my old boat, no more expensive two cycle oil and quiet!
Want to thank everyone who fished with me last year I had a great season, met some very nice people and as I can still say, I haven't had a group of people in the boat whose company I didn't enjoy. After fishing almost every day from early May into early November, by March I'm ready to do some open water fishing.
This year sons Jack and Tom made the trip with us again to the Florida Keys for our second annual fishing trip. From Mercer to Key West is a looong journey but the fishing is fantastic. Windy this year we didn't get to fish the Atlantic side but found good fishing on the gulf side, catching 50-100 or more fish in 6 or 7 hours is pretty routine. Bought a good fish I.D. book this year to identify most of the fish, we caught: blue striped grunts, porkfish, porgys, various kinds of snappers, red groupers, triggerfish, hogfish and sharks.
We camped and rented a boat again which afforded us a lot of fishing time. Would be glad to share my limited knowledge on March fishing in the Keys if anyone is looking to get away next winter.
There are enjoyable things to do this time of year, making maple syrup, deer scouting, antler shed hunting, but it is a shorter list this time of year . Then there is the yard cleanup, continuing onto today's list, a winter's worth of dog mess now that the snow has receded.
This time of year reminds me of the ending of one of my favorite movies, Jeremiah Johnson.
Jeremiah: You wouldn't happen to know what month of the year it is?
Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Why no, I truly wouldn't. Sorry pilgrim. Winter's a long time going?
Jeremiah: 'exhausted' Ah.
Bear Claw: Stays long this high.
Jeremiah: March. Maybe, April.
Bear Claw: March maybe. I don't believe April. March is a green muddy month down below, some folks like it,FARMERS mostly. You've done well to keep so much hair when so many's after it. I hope that you fare well.
