FISHING REPORT 1/20/16 9:34 AM CST Conditions: Cloudy Air Temp: 0° - 5° F Water Temp: Below 40° F Report from Saturday. With a big group and a lot of tip ups out we had steady flags all afternoon. We put a mix of minnows on the tip ups: walleye suckers,shiners and extra large fatheads. By adding in fatheads on some of the tip ups I feel you have a better chance at catching some of the big perch on the flowage. We fished water from 8-15' over mostly wood structure. We probably had a flag on average every 5-10 minutes I think a lot of perch bites. We did catch some nice perch, some big smallmouth but only one keeper walleye. Had a couple break lines, when tip up fishing you have to lightly pinch the line with your fingers for a drag when a big fish makes a run. That magic last hour when the walleyes usually bite best was slow on our tip ups. The "get the lines in quick" approach started with a delay when my auger started leaking propane profusely from one of the fittings. Fortunately a friend I met thru guiding three years ago was fishing a mile away and gladly borrowed his drill, also a propane Jiffy. Overall I have been happy with my Jiffy propane drill but if buying again would also look at the battery Ion, I know my Dad likes his. The highlight of the day was the food and laughter, Mark and Jeff had two grills and a fryer going with a constant flow of food for about 4 hours. One of my favorites, like last year, was the bacon wrapped asparagus, of the beef ribs, pork ribs,steak, shrimp etc. my favorite meat hands down was the bear tenderloin marinated in some kind of burgundy sauce. With a high temp of around zero the biggest challenge was keeping the beverages from freezing. Paul (friend who borrowed the drill) stopped by with his group to join us for a little food and drink, he introduced himself and friends then added, your "Friendly Illinois Brothers" which was met with laughter. TRAVEL: There wasn't any slush until this last snowfall, it doesn't take much snow to get water on top of the ice. People coming from the south are more accustomed to bringing 4 wheelers and I think they should still do fine as we don't have a lot of snow yet. If given a choice snowmobiles generally work better. There will probably be trucks driving out this weekend we had 11" of ice but again not that thick everywhere. We've been in a deep freeze again this week but the forecast for the weekend looks nice.
